Project Report 1
Life Review and Action Learning Pathway
Feedback from tutor richard Perkins 23/10/2011
Peter Hill
Presentation & Organization of Output Packet
Editing, shape, size
Awesome work Pete, a very high standard. Complete in all its elements, great portfolio of supporting evidence, great layout and links throughout texts, etc. Beautiful.
Appropriate size, LR a little over the word count but effectively used in content so no problems. Very well structured, considered and mature holistic approach to the PR in general, a pleasure to read through!
Mix of media, genres and styles
Great, nice to see your hand drawn inclusions, photos, supporting articles, etc, they enriched your PR in many ways and I found it very clear, accessible and flowing.
Nice to see how much you have engaged and achieved digitally, despite your feelings of resistance. The mindmaps are fantastic, and hopefully confirm that you can keep digital visuals to an absolute minimum.
Reflect on how to keep computer use to a minimum in how you document/ present future PRs. (It is totally acceptable to do everything by hand and just include legible photos online if you wish too.)
Management of Output Packet Creation
What you have achieved is a great foundation to drop future PRs into, worth the effort in my mind to have created such a functional, clear and valuable asset to you, other Dip. Students and others on this pathway/ seeking your skills…
Completed on time, and to a very high standard, great.
If computer time is restricting your flow then get off there. Try audio/ video/ hand written things too! Find a balance that works for you in this process.
Design Skills
Nice inclusion of informative and useful links. May be a place for building in links to connect different elements of each PR together, as well as all your PRs as time goes on…
I liked the quotes which enrich your story by sharing the inspiration/ motivation and direction you are taking.
Mind-maps clear, concise, informative and functional. Nice to see connections through your ALP. May be of benefit to set yourself deadlines and next achievable steps to help create a framework for time ahead. This may be useful to check back in with and see how your pathways developing later on.
Great use of web platform for showcasing your work, sharing your story and building a professional portfolio- nice!
Action learning skills (for Project and Output)
Great you engaged so deeply in your LR, its an exercise designed to give you leverage in your learning pathway design, which I think you have achieved naturally very nicely. A great example to other Dip. Students.
Your application of 80:20 rule and moving from software to flipchart proved wise and functional, saving time to beautiful results, great model of rapid prototyping.
Keeping a brief list of outcomes, maybe 3Ps is useful to collate learnings later in the pathway, and can help with mapping on say Wilbers quadrants.
Outcomes
Pete, a stunning start! I truly don’t think anything is missing here. A holistic, beautiful, grounded and well thought through response to the task at hand, completed on time. Very well done!
Project Report 1
Life Review and Action Learning Pathway
Ben Murray
Feedback from Peer Peter Hill 24/10/2011
Presentation & Organization of Output Packet
Editing, shape, size
Is the main body direct and clear of unnecessary technical clutter?
Yes.
Is the project report easy to navigate?
Yes, very.
Is the project report of appropriate size? Too much, too little?
Ben`s Goals articulation is clear, comprehensive and inspiring. The Life review is open, honest and reflective. The reader of this PR is left wanting to know more. I feel that it would work even better for Ben if the PR was further supported with more volume.
Does the report flow well?
The report is easily navigable with a natural flow
Mix of media, genres and styles
What do you think about choices regarding media, genre and style to enhance and support the meaning and the message of the project report?
(Media mix = (for example) video, slide presentation, written report, animations etc. Genres = story, documentary report, game, talk show etc. Styles = fonts, images, colour, graphical look and feel etc.)
Coming to terms with technology is a subject that I am personally all too familiar with! Perhaps the inclusion of a few images, explanatory diagrams, links to supporting evidence and videos would enhance Ben`s story.
Management of Output Packet Creation
Was the project report submitted on time with sufficient time allowed for peer review?
Yes, on time
Do you consider the project report complete with 3 P’s, learning journal extracts and personal process review, appendices, etc?
After looking through the PR, I have no doubt of Ben`s commitment to Permaculture Design, and to that of being of true benefit in the world. I do feel however that the inclusion of learning journal extracts as well as a reflective process review of the PR would assist both;
· Ben in developing and demonstrating his learning pathway further
· The reader in gaining a truer insight into the extent and value of Ben`s work
A more extensive Appendix with links, images and videos demonstrating the impressive amount of skills that Ben has already accomplished would also serve him very well in my opinion.
Design Skills
Articulation of Approach
Is it clear what design approaches/organizing frameworks and processes were considered for the design of the project?
Whilst Ben achieves good results, I feel that the design process needs to be more clearly demonstrated.
Project
Has your peer evidenced good use of design skills to influence the quality of their project and their action learning pathway?
My perception of Ben`s PR is that further evidence needs to be amassed in order to celebrate and do justice to the capable and proactive asset to the world that Ben`s CV tells me he is.
Critical Evaluation & Thinking
Any evidence of attempts to validate original thinking and has your peer provided some third-party evidence to support your conclusions? Links, references, etc?
Links, references and evidence provided at present in the PR are minimal which is a shame as Ben has achieved so much and already has an impressive skill and knowledge base. I feel that he should not hold back, and that unashamed demonstration and celebration of how limitless he really is are necessary to inform the world of the valuable work that he is doing!
Action learning skills (for Project and Output)
Concrete Experience (Awareness in action)
Does the report indicate balance between action and thought – does your peer seem to be able to get to action and act?
Ben certainly appears to be a man of action which straight away scores points with me
Reflective Observation (Appraisal of action outcomes)
Does your peer create the time, space for good quality reflection? Do the learning journal extracts seem useful?
Ben reflects openly and honestly in his well-constructed life review. I was not able to locate Learning Journal Extracts
Active Experimentation (Use of piloting and trials)
Does the report show readiness and inventiveness around designing and operating pilots and trials (rapid prototypes)? Is your peer “having a go” or in need of less planning and more doing?
My overall impression gained from looking through the PR is that Ben is an articulate and proactive Permaculture Design Apprentice, already amassing a considerable and diverse level of experiential learning. Reading through the various tasks that Ben is currently regularly involved with at Panya, and perusing the impressive list of activities in Ben`s comprehensive CV leaves me in no doubt that Ben obviously engages in a substantial reflection process. However, I feel that Ben may have evidenced and demonstrated this more clearly throughout the fabric of the PR.
Outcomes
Benefits to Field (Project)
Describe the 'value' of this work to the world?
In my opinion, Ben appears to already be making a significant contribution, sharing his developing skill base on many levels. It looks to me as though he is doing good stuff of great value to the world!
Growth of Skillflexes (Professional)
Can you reflect back professional skills you can see evolving?
Ben looks to be able to already grow a comprehensive and diverse package of food stuffs, as well as developing natural building and teaching skills directed to multi beneficiaries.
Internal Growth & Development (Personal)
Any personal insights and gains you can reflect back to your peer? Any clear (un)learning?
Undoubtedly the process that I personally gained significant benefit from during the designing of my own PR was the application of the 80:20 rule; get something down, anything, and then improve and build upon it. It was an antidote to procrastination that I was certainly in need of! I would recommend it`s application to anyone. It works!
Contributes to knowledge commons
Was there any movement towards disseminating the projects learnings? (eg, workshops, online tutorials, etc) Are their clear links available to the public/ peer group?
Ben is doing great work that he should be proud of. I would say that extended use of links and references throughout the PR would support his laying down a more clearly evidenced breadcrumb trail that would enable people to follow his example more easily. Having not met Ben myself, and not felt his energy personally, reading between the lines the overall impression that I gain is that he is a multi skilled and capable ally with a well-balanced and positive vision. I do feel that the PR does not fully demonstrate his prowess and does not completely do justice to his inner beauty, creativity and productivity.
Ben Murray's Peer Review of Peter Hill's diploma project 1:
Wow amazing! I don't want to “sugar coat” it, but I was very impressed, intrigued and a little overawed when comparing your comprehensive work to my very sketchy beginnings.
Presentation & Organisation;
Editing, Shape, Size;
Is the main body direct and clear of unnecessary technical clutter?
On the whole very clear and readable.
I felt that the Skill Flex was zooming in on details of previous projects a little more than necessary, (perhaps these elements might be better included in the appendix).
The bottom of the ALP was clipped.
Is the project report easy to navigate?
Very easy to navigate, well designed and fool-proof.
Is the project report of appropriate size? Too much, too little?
I felt that Pete presented a great deal of information. He obviously put a lot of work into producing a detailed package that was clear, direct and accessible.
Does the report flow well?
Good flow. Interesting and absorbing with easy transitions from one element to the next.
Great flip-chart sketches/illustrations, awesome photos. Felt that after reading the life review it put the project message into context. Liked the green text. Enjoyed the quotes.
Management of Output Packet Creation
Was the project report submitted on time with sufficient time allowed for peer review? Do you consider the project report complete with 3 P’s, learning journal extracts and personal process review, appendices, etc?
Project report was submitted on time and appears to me to be complete and very comprehensive.
Design Skills
Articulation of Approach
Is it clear what design approaches/organizing frameworks and processes were considered for the design of the project?
Good goals articulation for intentions during the alp, might be nice to include potential time-frame for projects. Seems that projects have been arranged in order of perceived priority.
Project
Has your peer evidenced good use of design skills to influence the quality of their project and their action learning pathway?
Good use of design skills in articulating intentions and visions. I thought the presentation of the alp was very good, unique and creative, a bit of a shame the bottom of the picture was clipped.
Critical Evaluation & Thinking
Any evidence of attempts to validate original thinking and has your peer provided some third-party evidence to support your conclusions? Links, references, etc?
Evidenced use of, and deep experience with observational analysis. this is something which I can relate to and which resonates deeply within me from my own experience (all-be-it much more limited than Pete's). Critical evaluation of standard academic process and willingness to disseminate information (supported in appendices).
Action learning skills (for Project and Output)
Concrete Experience (Awareness in action)
Does the report indicate balance between action and thought – does your peer seem to be able to get to action and act?
Yes, a great deal of information has been submitted. Originating as thought it has been transformed into text, images and a desire to share skills and knowledge with others.
Reflective Observation (Appraisal of action outcomes)
Does your peer create the time, space for good quality reflection? Do the learning journal extracts seem useful?
Good use of learning journal extracts as potential kickers for the 4 Qs. Great process reflection.
Active Experimentation (Use of piloting and trials)
Does the report show readiness and inventiveness around designing and operating pilots and trials (rapid prototypes)? Is your peer “having a go” or in need of less planning and more doing?
Seems to be a clear and definite intention to perform pilot /trial projects specifically with regard to the “Margam food forest” project.
Outcomes
Benefits to Field (Project)
Describe the 'value' of this work to the world?
I consider the value of developing observational skills and mindfulness to be of paramount importance to humanity.
Pete has evidenced a great deal of information in his appendices regarding his work with habitat restoration and management, work with kids, people with disabilities, local authorities and organisations and with the academic community which I feel could be of great value to the world.
Growth of Skill flexes (Professional)
Can you reflect back professional skills you can see evolving?
Highly developed observation skills can be developed and are a great asset (in my mind perhaps the most important) in the context of permaculture design; reading the landscape.
Also Pete describes himself as a technophobe yet I see Pete doing fantastic work in producing this website and the project 1 report.
Internal Growth & Development (Personal)
Any personal insights and gains you can reflect back to your peer? Any clear (un)learning?
Sorry, I don't feel comfortable or in a position to be able to answer this question at this time.
Contributes to knowledge commons
Was there any movement towards disseminating the projects learnings? (eg, workshops, online tutorials, etc) Are their clear links available to the public/ peer group?
Evidence supplied in appendices of disseminating information at talks/seminars in the past and clear intention to do so in the future.
Thank you for sharing and caring for each other’s growth, development and fulfilment. It is the desire and commitment to be of benefit that allows us to be of use!
Awesome work Pete. Good luck with all your projects. Hope we can meet up one day.
Best wishes,
Ben
